Welcome

This site is intended to serve as a repository for University policies. A University policy is defined as one with broad application throughout the University, that helps ensure coordinated compliance with applicable laws and regulations; promotes operational efficiencies; enhances the University's mission; or reduces institutional risk. Many important school, department or unit policies serve similar purposes but are unit-specific and are not included on this site (see School policies). Northwestern offices and units are encouraged to link to this site rather than creating their own pages with University policies. This will help ensure that everyone in the University is referencing the most current versions of University policies.

New Policy Announcement –  Research Data: Ownership, Retention and Access Policy

The Office for Research announces the issuance of the Research Data: Ownership, Retention and Access policy.

Individual researchers and the University have rights and responsibilities with respect to research data. This policy describes the basis of data ownership and the standards for the collection and retention of data, in addition to requirements for data access. This policy also provides guidance with respect to transfer of research data in the event a researcher leaves Northwestern University.

This policy enables Northwestern University to assure that research data are appropriately recorded and archived, and available for review under appropriate circumstances.

New Policy Announcement – Cost Sharing on Sponsored Programs Policy

The Office for Research announces the issuance of the Cost Sharing on Sponsored Programs policy.

Northwestern University engages in cost sharing when it is in the best overall interest of the University, but limited to situations in which it is mandated by the sponsor per solicitation or policy guidelines, or deemed appropriate in light of specific and compelling circumstances. This policy sets forth University policy on cost sharing and provides guidance on the appropriate and consistent management and reporting of cost sharing throughout the lifecycle of a sponsored project.

The Cost Sharing on Sponsored Programs policy was developed to define cost sharing and set forth the University’s position on cost sharing in support of sponsored projects; to advise the University community regarding the contractual, financial, and administrative implications of any commitment to cost share; and to ensure that cost sharing on sponsored projects is proposed, managed, and reported on in a manner consistent with and conforming to the applicable requirements found in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circulars A-110 and A-21.

Please familiarize yourself with this policy by visiting http://www.research.northwestern.edu/policies/documents/cost-sharing-sponsored-programs.pdf

Please direct questions about this policy to your school or unit office; Kelly Morrison, Cost Share Officer, Office for Sponsored Research kellym@northwestern.edu; or to the Policy Review Committee policy@northwestern.edu.
